Abandoned Chocolate Factory, Black Forest, Germany

The Schwarzwaldwerk Mauterer, was chocolate factory located in Malsch, Germany. Founded in 1899 by Carl Mauterer the factory became known for its high-quality chocolates and sweets. The factory continued its production even during World War II, despite significant disruptions due to the war.

The company was managed by Carl Mauterer's descendants until its closure in 1992.  Since then the factory has left decaying. Today the roof is leaking and many parts of the factory have been flooded by rainwater accellerating the rotting. Walking around you’ll find many of the original machines and molds for chocolate production  and wrapping paper lying around. And every sound you hear behind a corner, you fear that a rogue Oompa-Loompa might be waiting for you.

The factory remains a reminder of how many family-run business in Germany's Black Forest region withstood world wars but ultimately the forces of globalization and capitalism brought them to their knees.

I, Willy Wonka, have decided to allow five children – just five, mind you, and no more – to visit my factory this year.
