Pyongyang’s traffic security officers and how to become one

Traffic security officer, Pyongyang, North Korea, February 2017.

One of the particularities of Pyongyang are the traffic security officers. The requirements to become one are the following:

  • Female

  • Unmarried

  • Attractive

  • Healthy

  • Age 16 - 26

  • At least 1.65m tall-  High school graduate

The traffic officers enjoy high respect, status and better pay than other professions in the DPRK. After their retirement at 26 they have better access to post-graduate studies.
It is said that, to obtain a driver’s license one has to be male. I have heard that it is assumed there that it is too dangerous to let women drive. Reminds me of someplace… ENOUGH talking rather “We give our greatest honor to the great comrade Kim Jong Un” as the sign the background says.

But I was to remember how the confines of a car, it’s reassuring purr and motion breeds an extraordinary sense of isolation, intimacy… privacy.
